'Follow the Star' Christmas event - 29 November 2024 – Tickets on sale now!
BOOK NOW!It has been a great blessing that our year has started smoothly and well. We have enjoyed being able to gather as a community; both to welcome students back to a new school year on their first day back at our welcome assembly, and more recently at our dedication service in which we heard from a guest speaker and dedicated the year and our school to God.
One thing that we will be regularly visiting and unpacking this year is our mission statement - the ‘why’ behind our purpose and core existence as a school. Our mission statement says that we exist ‘To educate our students so that they are well skilled, understand life on the basis of biblical truth, and are motivated to walk with God and serve Him in their lives, so that they will be a positive Christian influence in the world’. This is a very inspiring and compelling reason for a Christian school to exist!
Throughout the course of this year, we will be developing a new strategic plan that will set our course for the next 4 years, whilst also providing a long-term ‘line of sight’ towards 2040. The development of a strategic plan is a process in which consideration, prayer, consultation and refinement are critical in ensuring that our future plans as a school are inspiring, but most importantly aligned with who God has called this school to be. And it is because of this reason that we always come back to the ‘why’ - our mission statement. Our mission statement becomes our plumb-line, our constant point of reference to ensure that future plans in where we want to go are most importantly aligned with who we are. I look forward to updating the community throughout the year on the development of our future plans, and also unpacking further our wonderful mission statement at St Andrews Christian College.
Welcome to 2023 and we have enjoyed a rewarding start to the school year. Thank you to staff, parents and students for their organisation and efforts to ensure that our school operates in such a smooth and efficient manner. I would like to welcome all of our new staff both teaching and non-teaching and our new families who have joined us in 2023 and hope that you are feeling settled at this stage of the term into your new roles and new classes. We are so thrilled that you have chosen to join the St Andrews community.
I would encourage all parents to keep a regular eye on the HUB for updates as well as email communication and the ‘Week at a glance’ notices, as these communications cover upcoming excursions, events and dates in the school calendar and any information that helps you as a family to be informed about the life of your St Andrews young person.
In Christ,
It has been wonderful to see our students back on campus for the start of the new school year and to see them so happily engaging with each other and their teachers. Our College theme for 2023 “Unity through Christ” has been a central focus as we have commenced the school year and I have been encouraged to see a real sense of unity and purpose being established in our students.
In the New Testament that are 100 “one another” statements in 94 verses. Love one another, accept one another, serve one another, and encourage one another are just a few. I am reminded of Paul’s letter to the Colossian church in Colossians 3: 12 – 15 which states “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body, you were called to peace. And be thankful.”
What a wonderful list of virtues for us to cultivate within the St Andrews community: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and thankfulness – all bound together in perfect unity by love. What a difference this will make to our society as we each take on these virtues.
We are pleased to be able to report that the Class of 2022 were able to achieve outstanding VCE Results – the best the College has seen. Congratulations to the College Dux – Andrea Chai who achieved an ATAR of 99.75 and to Jaiwei Wang, Kayle Dharmadasa, Yueshan Liu, Roselyn Kho, Michelle McCabe, Chavella Tanubrata, Paria Hassaniganji, Vicky Truong, Sarah Farmer, and Julia Pajor who all achieved an ATAR above 95.
Some of the highlights include:
Median Study Score: 33
43.9% of students achieved an ATAR above 90 (top 10% in the State)
58.5% of students achieved an ATAR above 80 (top 20% in the State)
5.1% of Study Scores were 45 or higher
18% of Study Scores were 40 or higher
Andrea Chai obtaining a perfect score of 50 in Biology.
The highest study scores obtained were: 50 – Biology, 49 – Further Mathematics, 48 – Chemistry and Mathematical Methods, 47 – English, 45 – Business Management, Health and Human Development, Further Mathematics and Music Performance, 44 – Chemistry (2), English (2) and Specialist Mathematics, 43 – Biology (3), English (2), Further Mathematics (2) and Mathematical Methods, 42 – Biology, Chemistry (2), English as an Additional Language, Further Mathematics, Languages: Indonesian Second Language and Psychology, 41 – Business Management, Chemistry, English, Physics and Psychology, 40 – Business Management, Languages: Chinese First Language and Theatre Studies.
To give some context to what these scores mean; only 2% of students in the State score 45 or higher in each subject, with 8% scoring 40 or higher and 24% scoring 35 or higher. At St Andrews, there were 9 study scores 45 or higher (5.1%), 37 study scores 40 or higher (18%) and 88 study scores 35 or higher (42.9%). It is extremely pleasing to see that students have been able to achieve such high scores, with each of these the highest level recorded at the College.
In 2022, 16 different subjects were offered at Year 12 level across 20 separate classes with a further 16 subjects offered at Year 11 level across 18 separate classes. Given the size of the Year 11 and Year 12 cohorts, this provides an excellent range of subjects for students to select and enables them to pursue pathways to tertiary education. The College commitment to running three English classes at each of Year 10, 11 and 12 has also been rewarded with a significant improvement in the study scores achieved.
The College is committed to providing students with the best possible learning opportunities and currently offer three English classes at each of Year 7, 10, 11 and 12. We also offer three Mathematics classes at each of Year 7 – 12. This effectively reduces the class size and enables teachers to provide students with more individual assistance and feedback. With an increased Elective Program in Year 8, 9 and 10, students have access to a wide range of subjects across the Secondary School and the flexibility to develop multiple pathways to further education.
As we have celebrated with our graduating students I have reflected on the attributes listed in our Graduate Student Profile: Godly in Character, Relationally Engaged, Life-Long Learner, Desire to Serve, Leader by Example, Authentic Faith, and have been encouraged to see how many of these have been exemplified in the young men and women who are now making the transition into the next phase of their life.
We are thankful to God that all students who applied for a tertiary place have received an offer. Students will be undertaking tertiary studies at a range of different institutions including: Australian Catholic University, Deakin University, Monash University, Swinburne University, The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and The University of Melbourne
The range of courses being undertaken include: Acting, Allied Health Assistance, Arts (Psychology), Business/Banking and Finance, Commerce, Communication, Computer Science, Engineering/Science, Exercise and Sports Science/Business, Fashion Enterprise, Health Sciences, Law, Laws/Arts, Medicine, Music, Paramedicine, Public Health and Health Promotion, Physiotherapy, Science, Science/Biomedical Science, Screen and Media, Secondary Education – Science, Songwriting and Music Production.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students is scheduled for Wednesday 15th – Friday 17th March. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.
In 2022 all schools in Australia commenced with the delivery of NAPLAN tests online. NAPLAN Online delivers numerous benefits including: a ‘tailored test’ design that adapts to correct and incorrect student responses providing a more precise understanding of student achievement; innovative use of technology, including a more engaging test design and a wider range of item types; the extension of the ‘test window’ to two weeks, allowing schools greater opportunity to schedule the tests at times that suit them best and increasing student participation.
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) has provided information for parents and carers on the VCAA Website. The link to the VCAA website is https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/f-10assessment/naplan/Pages/parents/index.aspx.
A copy of the printed NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers brochure is attached below. The brochure is also available in other languages via the VCAA website.

For those parents and students who would like to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online format, ACARA has provided a public demonstration website. The suite consists of mini-tests covering all domains for each NAPLAN year level. The demonstration site can be found at: https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/public-demonstration-site
At St Andrews Christian College we believe that all people are formed in the image of our creator God (Genesis 1:27) and that He has made us all different and unique, reflecting the diversity of the Trinity.
God delights in variety and differences, and this is echoed in the whole of creation, where diversity exists in unity. In humans, this is also evident in the variety of physical characteristics, personalities, talents and abilities, backgrounds and interests, understandings and interpretations, strengths, and weaknesses. At St Andrews, we are engaged in the dynamic process of shaping, and being shaped, into responsive disciples reflecting the heart, mind, and life of Christ.
As Christian educators, we are called to meet the needs of ALL students, regardless of abilities. In accepting and celebrating students of diverse abilities, we learn to accommodate the expression of differences. Diversity in abilities brings a richness and blessing to our school community and provides opportunities for us to serve each other. We learn to accept each other, understand and experience how we all fit in and belong to God’s family. This is one of the most important features of community, living as and living in the body of Christ.
It has been a wonderful start to 2023 and we welcome Aggie Chan to the Learning Support Team. Aggie is a speech pathologist and will be working each Tuesday and Thursday, conducting therapy and some social skills sessions to identified students. She will also be available to do Language assessments.
Learning Support is available to work alongside staff, students and parents on the journey of learning and development. This support will look different for each student, depending on the needs of the student and the type of support required. Support will be provided both in the classroom and for some students in a withdrawal setting. Please feel free to make contact if you have any questions or concerns about your child.
We look forward to partnering with you as we ‘educate our students so that they are well skilled, understand life on the basis of biblical truth, and are motivated to walk with God and serve Him in their lives, so that they will be a positive Christian influence in the world.’

Hello from the Wellbeing Team!
It’s very exciting to see students settling into the new year and making connections with friends. They are already getting involved in lunchtime activities such as: Friday LEGO Masters for Years 7-9; the Fundamentals our basketball fun on Tuesdays for Primary students; Bible studies and prayer groups. To encourage all students to have a say in what other activities are offered, they have completed a survey (yes, the Preps too!). Student voice is very important! As more lunchtime activities are available, we will let you know.
Our fantastic Wellbeing Captains in Primary and Secondary are off to a great start. Soon they will be communicating about their first planned activity, so be on the lookout for any news via the Hub.
Primary students are continuing with MeTree in their Health sessions. This program builds from year to year and is underpinned by a Biblical worldview. Students learn to: build a positive sense of identity, use a resilience and growth mindset, become a friend to themselves, dream big, persevere and impact their world.
In Week 4, we re-launch PULSE - the online wellbeing check-in for Secondary students. As part of their Pastoral Care, students get be engaged in conversations around their feelings of safety, social and emotional health, community connection and access to learning.
A fantastic Happy Families webinar is available: ‘Getting into the Learning Zone’. “In this insightful and powerful session, James Anderson will show you how you can help your child develop a strong positive relationship with challenge. He’ll show you the practical strategies you can use at home and in school to put your child on path towards embracing challenges and becoming a skilful learner. He’ll show you how to get your child into their Learning Zone.” Please see the link and password details below.

Finally, thank you to you, our wonderful St Andrews families, for partnering with us. And to Jesus, in whom we ‘live and move and have our being’ (Acts 17:28), you deserve all the glory!
It has been wonderful to welcome our Primary students and their families back for Term 1 of 2023. We have made a tremendous start to the year with lots of exciting learning, incursions and excursions and we are very proud of our students efforts to give their best.
The term started with our annual parent teacher information evening, and this was a great opportunity for parents to meet teachers and find out about the year ahead. The Prep teachers welcomed new parents and students to the school with a Tissues and Tea morning. This was a lovely way for the Prep parents to get to know each other and the St Andrews community a little more. Following on from this was a Prep Picnic and evening celebration with students and families enjoying games and a picnic dinner.
In other class news, Year 3/4 visited the Botanical gardens to further develop their knowledge and understanding of indigenous cultures. They enjoyed rock painting and sampling bush tea! In addition, our Year 4-6 students have been busy with their swimming, committing to trials and a swimming carnival. St Andrews took out the championship winning the Primary trophy for 2023! Many of our students this year will compete at the next level, CSEN Championships, in the coming weeks.
Closer to home students have settled into learning routines enjoying art, drama, STEM, story writing, maths and a host of lunch time activities. If you haven’t heard of FUNDAMENTALS, it is a lunch group run by Mike, from the Wellbeing team, for our keen basketball enthusiasts. Other lunch opportunities include gardening, knitting, art, reading and Cubed. It is wonderful to see our amazing student leaders stepping into supporting these ventures and personally developing their leadership skills. One major highlight has been a visit from Joe Wicks a fitness coach from the UK. We were one out of five schools in Australia to be chosen and we were truly blessed and inspired to not only look after our physical health but also our mental health.
Finally, as we near the end of term we are looking forward to our Extension Week coming up for Years 4-6. Teachers are busy planning a host of challenges ready to stretch and enthuse our young minds. We are also looking forward to sharing with you at the upcoming parent teacher interviews. These are always valuable opportunities and one that supports the parent partnership in enabling your children to thrive.
Please continue to keep the College in your prayers. We are fortunate to be able to share our faith as we teach and keep God central in all that we do.
Every blessing for the weeks ahead.
Recently we welcomed the new Primary School Captains with a morning tea. Representative leaders from the High School enthused students with new possibilities and our Chaplain, Warwick Grant prayed for them. Year 5/6 Coordinator, Josh Cram will be supporting the growth and development of this enthusiastic team and we look forward to some new initiatives this year. Well done captains!
We have loved starting school in Prep P. Our first day was one full of joy and excitement with a little bit of butterflies in our tummies. Since starting school on the 31st January we have enjoyed so many new experiences. We have made new friends, learnt letter names and sounds, learnt numbers 1-5, explored 2D shapes, learnt about Creation. We have loved getting to know our specialist teachers and starting to figure out what our favourite classes of the week are. One of our biggest highlights was our Prep Picnic where we came back to school with our families and enjoyed spending time with each other and playing fun games.
The Prep students have learnt their first memory verse from Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. We have loved talking about the amazing world God created and had fun making our own “In the Beginning” book.
We celebrated the Year of Rabbit and students embraced with the festive season. Student learnt the story of the ‘Nian’ and enjoyed making some crafts and saying some Chinese greetings.
In Health, the Year 1’s have been looking at being image bearers of our great God. He has made us unique and so wonderful! The children printed their special handprints onto some paper and transformed these hands into trees. We always want our roots to be planted near the streams of living water. How blessed are we to be able to have our Creator God always so near to us!
The students had lots of fun learning about light and shadows in our Science. They made a simple sundial using paper plates and pencils and tested them by placing them under the sun outside in the school grounds.
On 22nd February, the Year 4 students went on an excursion to the Cranbourne Botanical Garden to learn more about the Aboriginal culture. We had so much fun learning about some of the tools that Aboriginal people use. We also learned how to use water and ochre rock to make paint and looked at some very interesting native plants. The highlight of the day for all was to play in the wading pool on a beautiful sunny day.
The Secondary School hosted the first VCE Awards Assembly in February. At this assembly students who achieve outstanding academic results in 2022 were recognised. The top performing student in each subject received an award, and each student who achieved an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admittance Rank) above 95 was presented with a trophy. An ATAR score above 95 places students in the top 5% of the state for their results. It was very pleasing to see such a volume of students given awards for their hard work and dedication to their studies.
The College Dux for 2022, Andrea Chai, was also presented with the perpetual trophy. Andrea spoke to the students and parents about her experience at St Andrews and the lessons she learned whilst at the school, not only academically but spiritually as well.
One of the highlights was knowing that our students at St Andrews have been prepared to not only achieve excellent results but leave the school as outstanding people who have a heart to serve their future communities in their chosen field of work and studies.
Year 7 Camp In Week 3, we went to Coolamatong Camp for 5 days and 4 nights. It’s the first year we’ve had the experience of not getting to sleep in cabins. Instead of cabins, we had a form of cross-cabin-and-tent called a ‘tebin’. Like a cabin, it was made of wood and shaped like a small house, but the roof and door were made of tarp and we had to zip it up every night. Insects would crawl in and some of us were even spraying the outsides of our tebins with insect repellent!
Since Coolamatong was next to a lake (and the ocean), we had lots of water activities such as canoeing, raft-building, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and tubing. Everyone loved tubing because it was really fun! Basically, you sit in a large floatie and get pulled around by a boat! Some people even fell off. Thankfully, God blessed us with good weather.
Even though water activities were fun, dry activities were fun too! We did combat archery, indoor climbing, bike riding and we even went on a boat trip! We also went on an Indigenous walk with Aunt Cass about how the Aboriginal people survived a long time ago, and how plants can stimulate energy, make natural hand sanitiser, be a hairbrush that has natural conditioner in it, and even make ropes that can tow cars! At the end of the walk, we met someone famous who had been on ABC TV, SBS, and even had his own book! Mr. Beaky the budgerigar! He is the only budgie in the world that has been recorded to speak an aboriginal language.
Overall, Camp Coolamatong was fun and it was sad and hard to leave. We had lots of fun even though we would always be in fear whether there was either a cockroach in the shower, or whether a swarm of mosquitoes was waiting in your tebin!
In the past few years, secondary students celebrated Lunar New Year in class and followed many traditional customs. They learnt how to wrap dumplings, wontons and spring rolls. They watched the Gala show together. This year, another tradition is brought into classroom, pasting red couplets on door frames. Families usually reunite together and write couplets to express blessing for the coming year. Our students even praised God in writing Chinese characters on red couplets. Let us check them out!
Our primary school students were recently blessed with the opportunity to participate in a special workout session with internationally renowned fitness guru, Joe Wicks. Joe became famous during lockdown as he posted many fitness videos on YouTube that teachers across the world accessed. Through his fun videos, we were able to inspire students in maintaining healthy and balanced schedules. Out of the hundreds of Australian schools that applied, St Andrews was one of five to be chosen. It was incredible to see the energy and participation from all the primary students in the gym. From planks to star jumps, and burpees to sprinting, the students were really pushed to their limits! We praise God for such a wonderful opportunity and continue to encourage our students to stay active.
We are excited to announce that our ensembles are already underway for the year. Our ensembles offer a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their musical skills, work as a team, and enjoy the many benefits that come with being a part of a group that shares a love for music. We have a wide variety of ensembles available with each being led by a skilled and experienced teacher who is passionate about helping students grow as musicians.
For those who have not yet joined an ensemble, it's not too late! We encourage all students who are interested in music to get involved. It is an excellent way to make new friends, learn new skills, and have a lot of fun along the way. Information on our Ensembles and when they rehearse can be found on the Instrumental Music Hub Page.
As you know, the hub is a great resource for information about our school, its programs, and activities. However, we understand that sometimes finding specific information can be a bit tricky!
To help make navigating the hub for music information easier, we have created a pictograph that highlights exactly where you can find what you need. The pictograph is a visual representation of the hub, showing you exactly where to click/tap to access important information about our music programs, timetables, practise resources, and more.
As always, we appreciate your continued support and involvement in our instrumental music programs. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
It was wonderful to see so many in attendance for St Andrews Christian College’s Primary & Secondary Music Information Night, where parents were provided with valuable insights into the school's music program and students were offered the chance to explore different instruments.
The night started with a special performance by some of our music tutors, and parents and students had the opportunity to meet the music tutors in person, enabling them to learn more about the teachers and the instruments they teach.
One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the 2023 special offer of free instrument hire for the year for new enrolments for tuition on various wind instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone.
This offer is available to all students who will be starting a new instrument this year, please note that regular lesson fees still apply. There are only a limited number of instruments available for this offer and instruments will be allocated in order that we receive the instrument tuition applications, so it is encouraged to get the forms in early to secure a place.
More information about the 2023 Special Instrument Offer and our Big Sound Scholarship can be found on the Hub at the Instrumental Music Homepage or by clicking on the following link 2023 Special offer and Scholarship Information
Overall, the Music Information Night was a resounding success, providing valuable information and inspiration for both parents and students. St Andrews Christian College remains committed to providing outstanding opportunities in music education and is excited to welcome new students to join in the journey. All the latest information on what is happening in St Andrews Music in 2023 is available on the Hub at the Instrumental Music homepage.
Preps make exceptional artists! The preps have been using different techniques such as painting, drawing, collage, sculpture to explore God’s gift of colour and use it to express themselves freely.
The Year 9 2D Art elective students had the opportunity to work with a working artist, Sonia, to be a part of a collaborative artwork. They designed words to stencil onto pillowcases which will be on display at the Knox Festival on Saturday 4th of March, so look out for the student's artwork if you visit the event!
The Library staff would like to welcome everyone back to school for 2023. This year Mrs Ruth Miller joins the Library staff as the VCE study supervisor. She will be looking after the senior students during their study periods.
Students from Prep to Year 8 have all had an introduction to the library and have been shown where to locate resources they may need. Students in Years 5-12 have also been making excellent use of the library space during Recess and Lunch, which has been fantastic. During these times, members of the wellbeing team have been introducing themselves to students.
Accelerated Reader Programme
Students in Years 4-6 have begun their reading programme. Students have completed a STAR Reading quiz which provides them with an ideal range to read for best understanding. Students then select a book to read from the library collection and do an online quiz to test their comprehension. Students are encouraged to borrow from the lower end of their range to begin with, so they can be assured of success. Books can be exchanged in the Senior Library before school (from 8.30am), Recess, Lunch and after school.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The 2023 VPRC has now begun. Students in Years 7 and 8 participate in the Challenge as part of their reading programme for English. The minimum requirement to read to meet the challenge is 10 titles from the VPRC reading list (available on the VPRC website) and 5 books of their own choosing. While students are encouraged to borrow from the school library, they are able to read books from their local public library or from home. Later in the year, students will be shown how to register the titles that have been read.
Access extra resources for study through a membership of your local public library.
The Eastern Regional Libraries has offered to partner with St Andrews Christian College to enable students to access resources beyond the school.
All students need to do is have a parent/guardian sign them up for a library membership. This can be done at www.yourlibrary.com.au/students. Here, an account can be created by selecting the school from a drop down box. Once this is complete, parents/ guardians will be emailed a barcode and a pin/password that can be used to login and access library resources.
